Twenty minutes of exercise and a trainer whose attention is entirely yours. E-Pulsive’s private EMS sessions in Belgravia make an intriguing proposition for a crowded diary.
I am excellent at making dinner reservations. Reserving time for my own wellbeing requires considerably more persuasion. Somehow, a meal slips neatly into the diary, while a workout triggers complicated calculations involving travel, changing and whether dry shampoo can reasonably be asked to do that much.
E-Pulsive has found an interesting way into this particular negotiation: twenty minutes of exercise, privately coached, with electrical muscle stimulation adding to the work your muscles are doing. My interest is immediate. My questions follow shortly behind.
Founded in London in 2014 by Mario Kaspers and Eladio de León, E-Pulsive offers one-to-one EMS personal training at 9 Kinnerton Street in Belgravia. The appeal is a concentrated session shaped around the person wearing the suit, with a trainer adjusting the exercises and stimulation throughout. You have someone’s full attention for the duration. A surprisingly rare commodity.
First, the diary maths. The workout lasts twenty minutes, but allow forty-five for the appointment, including changing, fitting the equipment and finishing comfortably. That is still a manageable slice of the day, with enough room to avoid treating your wellbeing appointment like an airport connection.

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your goals, training experience and health. Then comes the suit fitting and calibration, meaning the trainer adjusts the settings to you. The studio supplies the base layer, equipment, water and towels. Bring trainers or non-slip socks and a dry change of clothes. So far, refreshingly little homework.
Now for the electrical part. EMS stands for electrical muscle stimulation. Electrodes in the suit send controlled electrical impulses that activate nerves and make muscles contract. Several major muscle groups can be stimulated at the same time, while you perform coached strength movements.
You are very much involved. Anyone hoping to stand there and let the outfit handle leg day will need to revise their expectations. The trainer guides your movements and controls the stimulation, adjusting its intensity as you go. E-Pulsive describes rhythmic tingling and contracting sensations that become stronger as the settings increase. You can ask for it to be reduced or stopped at any point.
For me, the coaching is a substantial part of the attraction. I want to understand what I’m doing, ask a question when something feels unfamiliar and have someone notice if my technique needs correcting. A private appointment makes room for all of that, without having to catch an instructor’s eye across a busy room.
The technology has research behind it, too. A review of twenty-six studies involving 1,183 adults found improvements in muscle strength and muscle mass with whole-body EMS. That is encouraging, although it cannot tell you exactly what results you will get, or prove that twenty minutes universally equals ninety minutes in the gym.

Before you get into the suit, the trainer needs to check that EMS is suitable for you. Pregnancy, an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, and some health conditions may rule it out or require medical advice. You should start gently, drink enough water and leave time to recover between sessions. Twenty minutes still counts as a workout.
An introductory appointment costs £60; a standard single studio session is £115, with packages and memberships available. It is a meaningful spend, buying individual coaching, adjustable equipment and a defined appointment. EMS also belongs within a broader routine, alongside cardio, mobility, conventional strength training and sport.
What appeals to me is the possibility of making exercise easier to keep doing. A focused appointment, fewer logistics and someone helping me through it could earn a regular place in my week. I already know how reliably I show up for dinner. I’d quite like to give my muscles the same courtesy.
