Christmas at Coworth Park: A Country House Filled With Festive Magic

Some Christmas memories arrive wrapped in the smallest details: a marshmallow turning golden over the fire, the rustle of a storybook before bedtime, the sudden hush when Father Christmas enters the room. At Coworth Park, these moments will unfold against the backdrop of an English country estate, where twinkling lights, festive tables and horse-drawn carriage rides promise a Christmas worth gathering for. From 19 November, Dorchester Collection’s countryside retreat in Ascot will dress for the season, inviting guests to leave the hurried world behind and settle into the pleasures of a country house Christmas.

At the centre of the celebrations are two residential occasions: a three-night Christmas House Party from 24 to 27 December and a two-night New Year stay beginning on 31 December. Around them, festive dining, family activities and quiet hours by the fire will give the season its rhythm.

Christmas Eve and the Delicious Sense of Anticipation

Christmas Eve at Coworth Park will begin with the rituals that make the waiting almost as wonderful as the day itself.

In The Drawing Room, seasonal afternoon tea will welcome guests to the house party, offering time to settle in, catch up and surrender to the holiday mood. For children, a secret Grotto awaits, while story time in The Christmas Den will bring young imaginations together around the promise of Christmas.

As daylight fades, dinner will draw guests to Michelin-starred Woven by Adam Smith or The Barn. Afterwards, live music and festive celebrations in The Drawing Room will carry the evening towards bedtime.

There is a particular pleasure in spending Christmas Eve somewhere that has thought of everything. Parents can linger over conversation; children can count the hours until morning. Upstairs, the greatest challenge may be persuading anyone to fall asleep.

A Christmas Morning to Remember

Christmas Day will begin with a visit from Father Christmas, bringing the excitement of the night before into joyful focus. Then comes the gathering around the table, where the hotel’s chefs will give familiar traditions a distinctly Coworth Park flourish.

At The Barn, the Christmas menu will include bergamot and Earl Grey smoked salmon with Portland crab salad, followed by Norfolk Bronze turkey and a Coworth Park Christmas pudding. The flavours promise both celebration and comfort, with the traditional centrepiece given the attention it deserves.

At Woven by Adam Smith, the Christmas menu will take a more intricate course. Dorset crab will arrive with kohlrabi, apple and Kaluga caviar, while a cep and truffle dumpling will be accompanied by feathered game consommé. Norfolk Bronze turkey will bring the unmistakable taste of Christmas to the table.

These are lunches to dress for, savour and remember: glasses raised, stories exchanged and the afternoon stretching invitingly ahead.

Films, Fireside Moments and One More Celebration

After lunch, Christmas will slip into a softer register. The Cosy Corner will offer festive films, while board games and seasonal treats in The Drawing Room will invite a little friendly competition.

This is the hour for loosening the schedule. Let the children choose a film, return to a much-loved game or find a comfortable spot and allow the conversation to wander. With the cooking and clearing away taken care of, everyone can enjoy the unhurried middle of Christmas Day.

Come evening, guests will gather in the Mansion House for a buffet dinner accompanied by live music. The celebrations continue, with another opportunity to draw up a chair and enjoy the company.

Boxing Day by Horse-Drawn Carriage

Boxing Day will begin leisurely, with a brunch buffet in the Mansion House before the estate beckons.

Horse-drawn carriage rides will offer a charming way to explore the grounds, giving families time to take in the countryside together. Afterwards, cream tea in The Drawing Room will provide a welcome reason to return indoors.

Younger guests will have adventures of their own, from a Christmas treasure hunt to a children’s party. On the Rose Lawn, marshmallow toasting and hot chocolate will add a sweet outdoor ritual to the day. Cold hands wrapped around a warm cup, chocolate on a lip, one more marshmallow requested: these are the details that tend to outlast the presents.

For adults, a cheese and wine tasting in the Woven Conservatory will offer an indulgent afternoon interlude. Those craving quieter pleasures can retreat to Coworth Park’s recently refreshed spa, allowing the festivities to pause for a while.

A Countryside Farewell to the Year

As the final days of December arrive, Coworth Park will prepare for a different kind of house party.

The two-night New Year stay will begin on 31 December with a traditional ploughman’s buffet lunch, followed by country pursuits on the estate. It is a chance to spend the last afternoon of the year outdoors before returning to prepare for the evening’s celebrations.

Guests will then choose between Gala Dinners at Woven by Adam Smith and The Barn.

At The Barn, native lobster and black truffle gratin, salt-aged beef Wellington and a signature chocolate and cherry cake will bring richness and ceremony to the occasion.

Woven’s celebratory tasting menu will feature butter-poached lobster with Singapore sauce, Hereford beef with oxtail Parmentier and black truffle, and a champagne and bergamot dessert. Each course will mark another delicious step towards midnight.

Champagne Beneath the Fireworks

As the countdown approaches, guests will gather in the Mansion House for live entertainment before welcoming 2027 with champagne and fireworks over the estate.

After the intimacy of Christmas and the pleasures of dinner, the night will end on a grander scale: glasses lifted, faces turned skywards and the countryside illuminated by bursts of colour. Then comes the welcome knowledge that there is no journey home to make, only a room waiting and a new year to wake up to.
