Thrilling Seafood and Wine at Lyon’s, Crouch End

I’ve also had a soft spot for neighbourhood independent restaurants, there is a level of love that goes into the food, so much that you can taste it. Situated in the heart of North London’s quaint Crouch End is Lyon’s, an independent and family-run seafood and wine bar that is winning over the locals.

Lyon’s 62-cover restaurant is a cosy affair with muted green banquettes, wooden floors and a white marble bar. The best table in my opinion faces directly out onto the street, the perfect window into the world.

Lyon’s is a wine bar in its own right and unsurprisingly the list is impressive, from wonderfully juicy reds to fresh and aromatic whites, there is something for everyone. The cocktails are extraordinary, try Old Time Tea Fashioned with butter washed single malt Scotch, black tea and fenugreek tincture, angostura bitters, malt syrup and chocolate orange. Try the homage to our favourite cuddly little explorer Paddington Bear, toasted brioche infused Pisco, marmalade, citrus and foamer.

Lyon’s has a firm ethos, food is sustainably-sourced and there is minimal waste. Ingredients are under the spotlight at Lyon’s and natural flavours are celebrated. The result is a series of dishes that are simple but so astoundingly beautiful, they closer resemble art than food.

Start with the Oysters, Carlingford and Maldon are available, opt for the Dressed Oysters. There are Ancho Chile & Apple Granita Oysters or Coal Fired Oysters with Chilli Miso Butter and a Jalapeno Mignonette.

Pair the Oysters with Snacks, from Lyon’s divine warm bread with whipped butter to Gordal Olives with delicious House Pickles. There is also a Chilli Crab Choux Bun with Plum Ketchup and Old Winchester that will have your eyes rolling back into your head.

Next are an array of small plates, choose the Hispi Cabbage with Sriracha Butter, Smoked Yoghurt and Fennel and the Smoked Duck with Szechuan Mayo, Orange and Mizuna. Follow with a larger plate, such as the star of the menu, sweet and smoky Masala BBQ Monkfish with Kerala Curry, Coconut Sambol, and Tomato Oil, paired with bronzed New Potatoes glistening with Paprika Butter. Heaven on a plate.

Last but certainly not least is dessert – wow. Try the creamy Roast White Chocolate Cremeux that is decorated with a Sesame Snap or the Honey Filo Cigar with Chamomile Cream and Elderflower Foam. For those without a sweet tooth there is a delicious cheese board loaded with Cornish Yarg and Lanark Blue, served with Sourdough Treacle Crackers and Red Grapes.

It’s impossible not to fall in love with Lyons, cosy, charming and boasts one of the most exciting menus I’ve ever tried. It will leave you speechless. Go immediately.

Lyon’s has a wonderful Tasting Menu for a minimum of 2 people. The last sitting for the tasting menu for lunch is 2pm during the week, 2.30pm on the weekend and 9pm for dinner. There is also a spectacular Set Menu, available Thursday – Saturday lunch, Tuesday – Thursday 5.30pm – 10pm, Friday & Saturday 5.30pm – 6pm (last booking). The menu is available for up to 8 people.
