Room is taken from ‘The Sun Still Rises’, a beautiful collection of poetry by Munna Abdelhady. Growing up in Pennsylvania, being a woman of colour was unfamiliar but poetry gave Munna a voice when she felt
like she didn’t have one.
Room
You come home with tears down your eyes
You have let this man control your mind
Your dress is covered with the letdown of the night
It is unfortunate
You sulk to your room
The curtains sharply shut
You snap any desire of sun away
Blackness reigns the room
The bedsheets unease
You wonder how long will this one be
You have let this man control you
Now you cannot even be
