The People and the Place: Outbuildings, Luxury Farm Stay in West Dorset

Outbuildings, the Luxury Farm’otel in West Dorset, is a place where time slowly rolls over the uninterrupted meadows. As your gaze reaches to the horizon, you will notice the sounds of songbirds, the sweet scent of wildflowers, and the crunch of the earth beneath your shoes. This is a place where you are invited to escape in timeless style. Curated through immaculate design, there is an intentional and beautiful simplicity here. This is a place that to be shared and enjoyed with those you love most.

Outbuildings is a family-run haven. Each entity is a product of the unique talents and skills of the family who have lovingly crafted this space. Perfectly conceptualised rooms and dining areas are filled with handcrafted and stylishly selected collections. There is a personal touch present in everything, its thoughtful and wholesome. As a result, Outbuildings has become a retreat that continues to create deep connection with all those who are fortunate to visit.

The family’s infused love for design, antiques, restoration and people, has created a place that has become a destination of choice for many. Karen and Bill have brought their years of tradition, experience and love for hospitality and entrusted their sons’ Ed and George and son-in-law Dom to transform the family farm into what it is today. You’ll find sophistication at every turn, with splendour, luxury and the right dose of fun too. What is really captivating about this place, is its ability to make your stay completely your own, be it a weekend filled with laughter and celebration, or taking a quiet moment for yourselves. You can be certain you will enjoy your get away at Outbuildings just the way you like it.

After spending time wandering around the farm, getting settled in, or in conversation with Ed or Dom, it will quickly become apparent that this cherished place has more than an exquisite luxury to it. It’s not only guests that are drawn here. Outbuildings has become a gathering point for those who are inspired by conscious creation, local sourcing, and meaningful interactions. From the luxury bathroom products crafted by local artisans to the morning tea served in vintage Denby cups lovingly sourced by Karen herself. It is great to get to enjoy something that can only be achieved through expressions of local craftsmanship, the fruition of personal projects and the warmth of genuine connections.

Dining from the Comfort of your Room or at The Cart Shed

Slow and relaxed mornings start with a charming breakfast hamper. This breakfast delight is delivered right to your room and is filled delicious treats including, farm-fresh eggs from Oldways Farm’s pasture-raised hens and mushrooms from Grown Up Mushrooms.

When dining socially, you’ll discover The Cart Shed at the heart of Outbuildings. The intimate dining barn, where a cosy fire crackles, presents the kind of delicious meals designed to bring people together. Whether for an intimate dinner for two or a lively gathering of many, you will savour thoughtfully created dishes showcasing the very best of local produce. Ingredients are sourced either from the farm’s own gardens or from the trusted locals.

What is really special about dining at the Cart Shed is that it offers dining that adapts to your wishes, tailored to the day, the moment and the company. Lunch can be selected from the Country Comforts menu and for dinner, you can opt for the A La Carte Menu, or really go for it by enjoying an evening spent celebrating good food with the four-course Chef’s selection dinner. This feast is crafted by Outbuildings very own Chef, Jussy Marshall and is really complemented with a glass of award-winning sparkling wine from the nearby Furleigh Estate.

Dining can be enjoyed under the open sky on the terrace with the trickle of the farmyard pond, or in the warmth of the barn.

If a cosy and private meal is more in line with your tastes for the close of day, dinner can be served directly to your room. A great touch is the “Text for a Tipple” where a quick message will help a hand-selected glass of wine or crafted cocktail find its way to your room.

Let’s Talk About the Rooms

Every room at Outbuildings offers its own unique feel. As you take in the aesthetic of the space, you’ll notice how artfully the interiors have been brought together. From their historical origin, as working parts of the farm, these rooms have been curated to capture their history. Thoughtfully refurbished, designed and styled, the charm spans nostalgic and modern-day luxuries. Each room has been transformed into something truly exquisite, making them more than just a place to stay but a space to savour.

All rooms offer their own framed views. These are of either the beautiful natural surrounds of the countryside, or the gardens that have received Bill’s generous time and love. All the rooms are filled with locally sourced bathing products, Naturalmat organic mattresses, luxurious robes and fluffy towels. And whether you’re bringing a pup, a little one, or need accessible options, there’s something for everyone.

You are spoilt with choice at Outbuildings. The Farrows, once the farm’s old pigsty is now revitalised and reimagined with a log burner, exposed timber and open plan double height ceilings, which look over the inner farm and wildlife pond from a private patio. The Sty, located in the 19th century brick farm building, is a beautiful cosy room with a handmade Cornish Bed Co. king sized bed, a comfy chesterfield sofa, and an all-season terrace with a bespoke outdoor fireplace.

The Pressing room, once filled with baskets of freshly picked apples awaiting transformation into crisp, golden cider, now has its historic flagstone floor supporting timeless furnishings. It has a large walk-in rainfall shower and a beautiful brass bateau bath patiently awaiting an afternoon of deep relaxation, and unhurried soaking.

If you are seeking a room to share, The Granary is exquisite and designed to accommodate you and your nearest and dearest with space for up to six guests. With two separate bedroom areas, and a generous living space that is full of incredible highlights. The suite has 2 William Holland baths, one in each of the bedroom spaces. One room has an emperor sized handmade bed and one of the baths doubles as a private indoor hot tub.

The second bedroom with its super-king bed has the second of its tubs. If that was not enough to feel pampered, the suite also boasts a spa-like bathroom brimming with unique and charming details. With two shower rooms, their own changing areas and a huge dough trough double sink. There is space, privacy and absolute luxury in abundance. The living area with its gorgeous green velvet sofa, is cosy and overlooks the beautiful courtyard at the heart of the property.

With interiors that are so well-curated, you may find yourself planning your next stay within hours of arrival or dreaming of how-to bring design ideas home. Fortunately, some of the beautiful textiles, interior elements and products are available to purchase at the on-site or online store. The velvet cushions are a must.
