The Amara: A Foodie’s Paradise in Limassol, Cyprus

Cyprus is an island steeped in history and mythology. Legends of ancient Greek gods and their place in the folklore of Cyprus abound. Beyond the intriguing myths, the island also boasts almost 365 days of sunshine and a laidback island vibe, so it comes as little surprise that people from across the world choose to visit this Mediterranean island. Sea waters are heavenly, hitting 30°C in high summer, and staying warm enough for a paddle even at Christmas, so it really is a year-round destination.

LUXE OUT

For the ultimate luxury hotel stay, The Amara should be at the top of your list. Situated near Limassol, it is a high-end, sophisticated sanctuary, with 207 elegantly designed rooms and suites all offering 180-degree views of the sea. With world-class restaurants headed by prominent celebrity chefs, a signature spa and infinity pool, just when you think you’ve seen it all, the AMARA ups the ante.

Named after the ancient Greek word Amarantos, meaning ‘everlasting,’ The Amara is the newest property of the Stademos Hotel Group collection, built in 2019. The inspiration for the hotel’s entire grand aesthetic is the essence of its name; a flower in perennial bloom, symbolising everlasting beauty. Looking at the type of glamourous clientele lounging elegantly by the pool, it seems this aesthetic has seeped through into the guests too, with perfect Instagram backdrops everywhere you look.

With the architecture and interior design carried out by SB Architects, David Rockwell Studio and WA Interiors, the hotel’s interiors are inspired by Cyprus’ heritage, with cultural influences and architectural details expressive of the island’s Mediterranean landscape. So often when staying in a luxury hotel the generic personality-void design means you could be anywhere in the world, so it’s refreshing to stay somewhere so in keeping with its environment and heritage.

On wandering around the hotel, you could be forgiven for thinking you have stepped through a portal into a gallery. As well as the stylish bespoke travertine and marble stones, glass, resins and the finest fabrics are balanced by contemporary artworks and paintings. Featuring antiques and vintage pieces as well as modern statues and art installations, there is a seamless fusion between timeless elegance and innovative luxury design.

ROOMS

Once you’ve had your fill of the main hotel building (which may never happen) then so to bed. Floor-to-ceiling windows welcome an abundance of natural light into the rooms and suites, which are filled with soft, sandy tones, and blues and teals reflecting the sea view. Insulated flooring ensures peace and quiet, while automated mood lighting, motorised curtains, a wireless lighting control system and a state-of-the-art variable speed cooling or heating system that, stop press, isn’t disturbingly loud, combine for an uber comfortable stay. Add to that the world’s biggest and most comfortable bed, a walk-in shower, huge bath, and a complimentary soft drink mini-bar and Nespresso machine, so the old and new meet perfectly.

With a selection of interconnecting bedrooms, spacious junior suites, duplex roof-top suites with a private pool, and seafront cabanas, there is a space for all tastes (and budgets).  And why not go wild and upgrade to what is probably the standout offering, a two-bedroom AMARA suite spanning 230m²? It’s the epitome of ultimate indulgence, featuring a spacious elegant terrace and a pool of 100m² overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. With well-placed rumours guests such as Kylie Minogue and Prince Edward have stayed here, if it’s good enough for royalty, and pop royalty, it’s good enough for us.

FOODIE PARADISE

Now to the restaurants, and word to the wise, do not come here and expect to exercise any form of restraint, as it isn’t possible, and frankly should not be encouraged anyway. The Amara is THE destination restaurant for foodies, as not one but three celebrity chefs have decided to set up shop here. Make sure to pack elasticated waist trousers, otherwise you’ll be opening more than one button on your jeans on the flight home.

World-renowned Chef Nobu Matsuhisa needs no introduction. With a Whiskey Bar and a Teppanyaki Table, Matsuhisa Limassol offers a highly contemporary vision of Japanese cuisine, creating a gastronomic encounter between Asia and Latin America. Nobu’s legendary signature dishes are on the menu including salmon karashi su miso, not-to-be-missed black cod with miso, rock shrimp tempura and plentiful sushi and sashimi. Incredible food, signature cocktails and a DJ, this restaurant is the perfect spot for a glamourous and fun evening.

Next up is Ristorante Locatelli, headed by celebrity chef Giorgio Locatelli, who is considered by many to be one of the finest Italian chefs in the world. Here he brings to Cyprus his version of traditional Italian dishes, emphasising the quality and freshness of each ingredient that he uses, as well as adding his own creative flair. Homemade pasta (don’t visit without trying the incredible tagliatelle al ragu di capretto) and delicious risotto, with unexpected twists proving that even the simplest Italian dishes can be unforgettable both in looks and taste. Throw in impeccable service and wonderful views of the Mediterranean Sea, and you have a winning combination.

And last but by no means least, BeefBar. A concept born in Monte-Carlo, Beefbar has made its way to the shores of Cyprus, offering visitors to the AMARA creative street food, and iconic main courses and sides made with the best meat cuts from all over the world.

With its glamorous architectural lines, bold menus, and a luxurious ambience, BeefBar breaks the stiff code of traditional steakhouses. Mini Kobe beef burger anyone? Or maybe a prime fillet steak served with BeefBar’s signature sauce? Make sure to order the ‘Rock Corn’, sweetcorn in tempura with a spicy mayo, not only the coolest sounding dish, but one of the best sides you’ll ever eat.

Wait, there’s more! It’s not all about the celeb offerings. The Amara’s dedicated fish and seafood restaurant is a beautiful space. Featuring a rich range of dishes, all carefully selected and prepared using the freshest local ingredients, Nerea is the ultimate in beachside dining. And, often described as the best meal in any hotel (although there is extreme competition at The Amara), breakfast is served. A veritable banquet of freshly made pastries, hot options, fresh fruit and yoghurt, there is even a ‘Cypriot Corner’ offering local delicacies including carob, a sweet pulp from trees that is delicious served on a dollop of ricotta. Eating outside on the terrace, with a strong coffee at hand, it’s the perfect way to start what will inevitably be a perfect day at The Amara.

POOL-SIDE

If being poolside is your thing (and really if it isn’t who even are you?) then you are spoilt for choice here. Whether you feel like plunging straight into the refreshing waters of one of the several pools, or stretching out on the deluxe lounge chairs, the temperature is always perfect and inviting. The infinity pool is beautifully tiled and has fabulous views of the beach and sea, and there is a children’s pool too, which at only 40cm deep is perfect for the mini members of the family. There is also a saltwater pool and private cabanas, so you are spoilt for choice.

THE SPA & THE GYM

Now there are spas, and there is The Amara’s Signature Spa. It’s huge, a whopping three thousand square metres of relaxation space built next an old archaeological site, of which a stunning ancient wall still exists.  Combining ancient Mediterranean rituals with modern expertise, there is a team of skilled Spa therapists using Cosmedix and Organic Pharmacy products for bespoke treatments. As well as a fully equipped gym, there is a personal trainer and daily classes such as Zumba, Spinning and HIIT. A hairdressing salon, barbershop, and nail bar are also available, for a full spruce up.

AND IF YOU LEAVE THE HOTEL?

There is so much to see and do. Scenic hiking trails, which loop through woodlands, charming hillside villages, coastal paths, waterfalls, and even, believe it or not, snowy mountains. You could hire a car (and conveniently, because Cyprus was once part of the British Empire, it’s left-hand drive on the Island) and head out to the vibrant and picturesque town of Lefkara known for its arts and crafts. Or you could admire the jaw-dropping landscapes of the Troodos Mountains, winding your way through unspoilt villages and picturesque Byzantine monasteries, crossing stunning river valleys and mountain scenery while you’re at it. Omodos is well worth a visit; the village has been producing wine for centuries, and holds a wine festival every August. Walk up to the 17th-Century stone-built monastery via a cobblestone path and sample local wine for free at many places. Top tip; wear flat shoes as the cobbles, combined with the wine-tasting, could make the return walk a little tricky.

There is also lots to see and do in Paphos, so on the way make sure to stop off at Aphrodite’s Rock. As the name suggests, the rock is associated with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. According to legend, this was the place where the goddess was born, and although it’s a tourist hot spot now, it’s definitely worth a visit. Once you get to Paphos, you could indulge in a spot of people-watching at Paphos Harbour, or visit The Tomb of the Kings, an ancient necropolis of underground tombs carved out of solid rock and dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

THE ELYSIUM:

If you want to stay in Paphos, another fabulous option could be The Elysium, also part of the Stademos Hotel Group. The Elysium’s palatial design and extensive landscaped gardens are enhanced by grand colonnades, mosaics, and waterfalls. The idyllic setting of the Elysium is perfect for a honeymoon, anniversary, or simply a break from the rush of everyday life. Accommodation options cater to the needs of couples and families alike, from lavish studios to private villas tucked amid lush gardens, each room differs in style and spirit. It’s less glamorous than The Amara, but no less luxurious. With a warm and welcoming vibe, five restaurants and a large spa, it would make for an equally lovely holiday.
