Sticks ’n’ Sushi World Sake Day

Sticks’n’Sushi Celebrates World Sake Day with a Series of October Events. Globally recognised, World Sake Day on October 1st celebrates the official start of sake production in Japan, and there’s no better place to mark the occasion than at the Danish-Japanese fusion restaurant, Sticks’n’Sushi.

Throughout October, expand your sake palate and immerse yourself in the culture at one of four distinctive events, hosted at select London locations. A must-attend for those looking to celebrate the tradition and artistry behind Japan’s most iconic beverage.

We had the pleasure of attending an exclusive sake tasting masterclass led by experts at Takara Brewery, guided by their knowledgeable experts. The experience featured a curated selection of five sakes, including the crowd-favorites Nigori and Gokai.

As we sipped, we were transported through 2,500 years of history, gaining fascinating insights into the production of this traditional beverage. We were given an introduction to sake and how it’s enjoyed, making it ideal for beginners. The brewing process was then explained to us, highlighting the different types of rice—whether table rice or sake-designated—and the role of water in shaping the final product. Hard water tends to produce a drier sake, while soft water results in a smoother, more refined flavour.

We then kicked off the sake tasting, starting with Sho Chiku Bai Gokai, a more dynamic, traditional sake and my personal favourite. As we progressed through the lineup, the distinct flavours became more apparent, ranging from dry to semi-dry varieties. We also considered the sake meter value (the lower the number, the sweeter the sake, the higher the dryer) and how each sake was served—whether warm, chilled, or at room temperature. The tasting concluded with Sho Chiku Bai Nigori Silky Mild, which had a beautifully sweet finish.

Pairing the sake with delicious bites from the Sticks’n’Sushi kitchen—fresh sushi and other light treats—elevated the tasting to a new level of indulgence. It was an informative and delightful experience, blending culture, flavour, and craftsmanship.

The next event takes place on Tuesday, 15th October, from 7-9pm – tickets are available
