Sticks’n’Sushi, the acclaimed Danish-Japanese restaurant group, has announced the opening of its 14th UK location in Islington, marking its debut in North London. Nestled on Upper Street and overlooking Islington Green, this new spot boasts a 3,500-square-foot, double-fronted space designed by Berlin-based studio Diener & Diener. The interior seamlessly blends Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian elegance, featuring a timber and glass façade, earthy tones, and abstract pendant lighting to create an inviting, open-plan dining experience.
The restaurant will offer 120 covers, including an outdoor seating area, and feature a large kitchen counter, lounge, and bar. Guests can expect Sticks’n’Sushi’s signature menu of sushi, yakitori sticks, fresh salads, and an extensive selection of drinks, including sake, Japanese teas, and crafted cocktails. Notable dishes include the Black Cod house roll, along with set menus catering to diverse tastes and budgets.
Sticks and Sushi is my favourite spot for dining out, offering exceptional service and top-quality food every time. I’ve always been a huge fan, often making trips into town, especially to the Covent Garden location, where the lively atmosphere adds to the experience. So, when I found out they were opening a branch closer to home in Islington, I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to try it.
My go-to order is The Perfect Day to Share, a delicious mix of hot dishes and sushi that never disappoints. It is one of the popular sharing menu dishes that brings together an impressive variety of both sushi and hot dishes, designed to offer a well-rounded dining experience.
It typically features a mix of fresh, skillfully crafted sushi, like nigiri and maki rolls, alongside sizzling grilled yakitori sticks with options that might include meat, seafood, and vegetables. The Crispy Ebi has that satisfying crunch and a balance of flavors, the Spicy Tuna offers a bold, savoury kick, and Tsukune adds a touch of sweetness with the teriyaki glaze.
This combination is perfect for those who want to savour both the vibrant flavours of sushi and the warm, comforting taste of grilled items.
I always choose sake to accompany my sushi, so I was thrilled to experience the Sticks and Sushi collaboration with Kanpai London. This sake offers a comforting and warm blend of flavors, featuring notes of lychee, pear, and honeydew melon.
For dessert, if you have room, the vanilla crème brûlée with black sesame crumble is a divine choice. The creamy, velvety custard is perfectly complemented by the crisp caramelized sugar topping, while the nutty black sesame crumble adds a unique, satisfying crunch.
