Richard Mille Unveils the RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat: A Contemporary Masterpiece

With the RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat, Richard Mille redefines its signature rectangular timepiece, the RM 016, offering a bold and modern reinterpretation of its established design ethos. This striking new model blends minimalist lines with extraordinary technical innovation, showcasing an urban aesthetic inspired by the raw, functional beauty of Brutalist architecture.

A Design Rooted in Bold Simplicity

At first glance, the RM 16-02 captivates with its clean yet complex visual identity. Its interlaced forms resemble a labyrinth, inviting exploration with every detail uncovered. Echoing the philosophy of Brutalism, the design emphasises authenticity, with materials and craftsmanship taking centre stage. The intricate maze of geometric shapes and optical illusions evokes a sense of structured contemplation, drawing the observer into a dialogue between form and function.

The Power Within: Calibre CRMA9

At the heart of this innovative timepiece lies the Calibre CRMA9, the latest in Richard Mille’s family of in-house movements. This skeletonised marvel, crafted in grade 5 titanium, is engineered to maximise light entry through its openwork design.

  • Exceptional Engineering: The microblasted baseplate features 67 meticulously chamfered openings, each requiring over two hours of precise milling. This process creates a sense of weightlessness and transparency, enhancing the interplay of shapes and depth.
  • Durability Meets Precision: Both the baseplate and bridges have undergone 10-year ageing and shock-resistance tests, ensuring they stand up to the demands of everyday life.

The rear bridges further enrich the silhouette of the movement, while the oscillating weight, made of platinum with grade 5 titanium inertia blocks, ensures efficient winding of the 50-hour power reserve. Mounted on ceramic ball bearings, the bidirectional rotor adds another layer of reliability and technical sophistication.

An Enigmatic Dial

The RM 16-02’s hour markers introduce a unique visual signature. A thread-like decal weaves through the skeletonised maze of the movement, creating indices that play with perception. These finely designed markers establish a subtle, dynamic connection between the watch and its wearer, offering an enigmatic motif that invites interpretation.

Streamlined Form, Exceptional Comfort

The extra-flat rectangular case has been reimagined for optimal ergonomics, offering a 10% reduction in size compared to its predecessor. Measuring 36 x 45.65 mm, the refined dimensions enhance wearability while preserving Richard Mille’s distinctive style. With a water resistance of 30 metres, the RM 16-02 is as functional as it is elegant.

Two case versions are available:

  1. Grade 5 Titanium: Featuring microblasted, satin-finished surfaces with polished bevels.
  2. Terracotta Quartz TPT®: A groundbreaking colourway created through an innovative layering process. Silica threads impregnated with a coloured matrix are stacked at 45° angles, heated to 120°C under high pressure, and milled to perfection. The terracotta hue is paired with a caseband of Creamy White Quartz TPT®, embodying the raw and utilitarian ethos of Brutalist design.

A Celebration of Form and Function

The RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat is more than a watch—it’s a synthesis of mechanical ingenuity and artistic vision. Its sculptural shape, technical precision, and evocative design make it a true reflection of Richard Mille’s commitment to innovation. Whether dynamic or meditative, the RM 16-02 invites wearers to engage their imagination, redefining the boundaries of modern watchmaking.
