The Post-Holiday Hair Repair Guide: How to Rescue Hair After Sun, Sea and Chlorine

From a cult pre-shampoo treatment to intensive bond repair and the brush that makes detangling feel like part of the ritual, these are the steps and products that can bring dry, brittle post-holiday hair back to life.

There is a particular kind of betrayal that happens at the end of a beautiful summer holiday. Your skin is glowing, your camera roll is full and yet your hair suddenly feels dry, faded and almost impossible to style. Days spent moving between the sun, sea and swimming pool may be wonderful for us, but they can leave the hair dehydrated, tangled and far more vulnerable to breakage.

UV exposure can affect both the colour and condition of the hair, while salt water draws out moisture and chlorine can leave behind build-up that makes the lengths feel rough or brittle. Add heat styling, tight holiday hairstyles and repeated brushing into the equation and even previously healthy hair can return home looking noticeably worse for wear.

The good news is that post-holiday hair repair does not require an entirely new bathroom shelf. The most effective approach is a considered routine that combines moisture, bond-building technology and gentler handling. These are the products worth reaching for after weeks of sun, sea and chlorine and the steps that will help them work harder.

Begin Before Shampooing

When the ends feel straw-like, it is tempting to reach immediately for the richest conditioner you can find. A pre-shampoo treatment, however, allows you to give vulnerable lengths an intensive dose of moisture before cleansing.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is one of the most iconic treatments in this category. Originally created for Audrey Hepburn, the deep-conditioning formula is designed to restore elasticity, bounce and shine to dry, dehydrated hair. Apply it to damp mid-lengths and ends before shampooing, leave it for at least 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Philip Kingsley says the treatment is clinically proven to reduce breakage after one use, making it particularly well suited to hair that feels weak after a holiday.

This is not a conditioner replacement. Think of it as the first step in the recovery ritual, especially when the hair has lost the softness and movement it had before the summer.

Choose Your Shampoo and Conditioner by Hair Texture

Post-holiday hair needs moisture, but not every texture needs the same amount. Using formulas that are too rich can leave finer or medium hair flat at the roots, while something too light may do very little for coarse, wavy or intensely dehydrated lengths.

For medium-textured hair or hair that tends to be oilier at the roots and drier through the ends, the Philip Kingsley Moisture Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner are designed to restore moisture where it is needed without overwhelming the hair. The duo helps address dryness, frizz and tangling while keeping the finish soft and bouncy rather than heavy.

Coarse, wavy or particularly thirsty hair may need something more substantial. The Philip Kingsley Re-Moisturizing Must-Haves Kit combines the brand’s Elasticizer Extreme and Bond Builder treatments with its Re-Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. It is the richer route for hair that needs weight, control and a more intensive hydration reset.

For a more affordable bond-repair option, the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Bond Repair Sulphate-Free Shampoo, £11.99, and Conditioner, £11.99 bring the same Citric Acid Complex found throughout the range into the cleansing stage. The shampoo creates a rich, creamy lather while gently cleansing damaged hair, and the conditioner is designed to help seal the cuticle and make vulnerable lengths easier to detangle. Leave the conditioner on for three minutes before rinsing, concentrating it from the mid-lengths to the ends. It is an accessible pairing for hair weakened by colour, heat and the cumulative effects of a summer spent in the sun and water.

Whichever routine you choose, concentrate conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends, where holiday damage is usually most visible. If the scalp feels congested after days of SPF, sweat and swimming, cleanse thoroughly but resist the urge to scrub already-fragile lengths.

Add Targeted Bond Repair

Moisture and bond repair are not interchangeable. A hydrating mask can make parched hair feel softer and more manageable, while a bond-building treatment is designed to reinforce the internal structure of weakened strands. Hair that has been coloured, bleached or regularly heat-styled before the holiday may benefit from both — although piling several intensive treatments into one wash is rarely necessary.

OUAI Bond Repair Balm, £46

For a quick in-shower option, OUAI Bond Repair Balm is designed to work in three minutes. Used after shampoo in place of conditioner, the rinse-out treatment targets damage caused by heat, colour, breakage and split ends. Vegan silk protein helps smooth and strengthen the cuticle, hyaluronic acid supports hydration and elasticity, and a peptide derived from hydrolysed rice protein reinforces damaged strands.

According to a consumer perception study of 106 participants, 90 per cent said their hair felt healthier after the first use. It is an appealing option for anyone who wants the benefits of an intensive treatment without turning wash day into an hour-long appointment.

Living Proof Triple Bond Complex, £42

My strongest recommendation and a personal favourite is Living Proof Triple Bond Complex. This is the product I would reach for when holiday-damaged hair needs more than surface-level softness. The weekly leave-in treatment is applied to clean, damp hair after shampoo and conditioner, then left for ten minutes before any other styling products are added.

Living Proof says Triple Bond Complex makes hair eight times stronger against grooming breakage and can reverse a year’s worth of damage in a single use, based on improvements to the hair’s protein structure compared with untreated hair. It also provides heat protection up to 232°C and helps defend against future thermal and UV damage. The result is hair that feels smoother, stronger and more polished without the weight sometimes associated with a traditional mask.

L’Oréal Paris Elvive Bond Repair Leave-In Serum

Effective post-holiday hair repair does not have to be expensive. L’Oréal Paris Elvive Bond Repair Leave-In Serum is the accessible finishing option for damaged lengths and frayed-looking ends. Powered by a Citric Acid Complex, it can be applied to wet or dry hair and offers added shine and heat protection.

The brand reports 98 per cent stronger hair and 82 per cent more shine after applying the serum. Its claim of up to 12 times fewer split ends is based on instrumental testing after five applications of the complete Elvive Bond Repair routine, so it is important to distinguish that result from using the serum alone.

Even as a standalone step, however, two drops worked through the lengths and ends make it an easy way to give damaged hair additional protection without a luxury price tag.

Be Gentle After the Mask

The products used in the shower are only part of the answer. Wet, weakened hair is more susceptible to stretching and snapping, so aggressive towel-drying and pulling a brush through knots can undo some of the care you have just put into it.

Once the mask or treatment has been rinsed away and the hair is dry, the La Bonne Brosse x Roseanna N04 Sky Salty Gelato Brush, £156 turns brushing into a gentler finishing ritual. Its combination of boar bristles and soft nylon fibres is designed to detangle without painful pulling while distributing the hair’s natural oils from root to tip. The compact Blue Salty Gelato design also feels made for summer although its real value is the reminder that how we handle damaged hair matters just as much as what we apply to it.

Begin at the ends, work upwards gradually and never force the brush through a knot. If hair is still wet, use your fingers or a suitable wide-tooth comb first and save the boar-bristle brush for dry hair.

Protect It Before the Next Holiday

The final step in post-holiday hair repair is preventing the same damage from happening again. Hair protection is often forgotten beside facial and body SPF, but UV exposure can contribute to dryness, frizz, colour fading and weakened cuticles.

La Bonne Brosse Cair Protection Oil, £42 is designed to shield the hair from UV exposure, pollution and dryness while nourishing the lengths and sealing the cuticle. The formula combines antioxidant vitamin E, karanja oil, broccoli oil and a fermented complex of argan, almond, camellia, green tea and sunflower oils.

Warm a small amount between the hands and apply it to dry or towel-dried hair, adjusting the number of drops according to its length and thickness. The brand recommends reapplying after swimming for additional summer protection. After 28 days of daily sun exposure, 90 per cent of testers reported that their hair felt stronger, less dry and less brittle.

Use it on the next holiday, not only once the damage has already been done. A protective oil, a hat and rinsing the hair with fresh water after swimming are small habits that can make the return home far less dramatic.

When Is It Time for a Trim?

Treatments can improve strength, softness and the appearance of damaged ends, but they cannot permanently repair a split that continues travelling up the hair shaft. If the ends remain rough, visibly split or impossible to detangle after several weeks of careful treatment, a small trim may be the most effective reset.

For everything else, consistency is more valuable than excess. Alternate moisture treatments with bond repair, reduce heat where possible and handle the hair gently. Post-holiday hair may not recover in a single wash, but with the right balance of hydration, strengthening and protection, its gloss, movement and resilience can return long before the tan disappears.
