London’s award-winning Berners Tavern has recently launched a set menu, and it does not fall short of its steady acclaim. The ‘Early Berners’ menu acts as a pre-theatre offering, tending to all those in need of a quick bite in the city. Available Monday through Saturday from 5:00 – 6:30 pm, the offer is ideal as an affordable way to sample their sought-after modern British cuisine.
Characterised by 18ft (high) ceilings, ornamental plasterwork and a striking set of NYC’s Grand Central Station-inspired bronze chandeliers, the dining hall is captivating. It’s a theatre within itself.
The walls are lined with a curated selection of over 180 contemporary photographs hung salon-style amidst elegant dim lighting. Circle booths line down the centre (with the remaining seating arranged around the perimeters), and the glowing bar bears semblances to a built-in bookcase, presenting an authentic, historic charm.
But the interior is not all that’s impressive.
Featuring highlights from the A la carte menu, the food is excellent, served with generous portion sizes and made with ingredients of uncompromised quality.
The seasonal dishes are led by Michelin-starred English chef, Jason Atherton and include British favourites, such as the beautifully assembled Prawn Cocktail starter with lobster jelly, avocado wasabi puree and crispy shallots.
The Butternut Squash Soup with chilli creme fraiche, roasted chestnut, saffron fava beans, chorizo and brassica vegetables is a comforting choice to begin with and features a delicious combination of flavours, textures and temperatures.
Following on, the delicate Roasted Welsh Salmon on a bed of rich, red wine lentils with mushroom and bacon.
For a vegetarian delight, the Spelt Risotto with roasted purple sprouting broccoli, artichoke, cauliflower and marmite puree is the way to go. And for the meat lovers, for a supplement of £10, the 10oz sirloin is all yours – it comes with Koffman’s fries too!
There’s always room for dessert, and opting for the slice of Pistachio and Raspberry Chocolate Opera, topped with a tangy raspberry sorbet will perfectly satiate that sweet craving.
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, on the side of Oxford Street, Burners Tavern is a well-known hot spot, housed in the remarkable London EDITION Hotel. Keep an eye out for the iconic champagne trolley that glides around the hall, welcoming all from table to table.
With prices starting at just £29.50 for 2 courses and £35 for 3 courses, the ‘Early Berners’ menu offers an unbeatable opportunity to experience this dazzling tavern. Sink in and savour every moment.
