Carousel Wine Bar, Charlotte Street

Sitting pretty on the bustling Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia, Carousel Wine Bar isn’t just another spot for a meal—it’s a culinary carnival led by the inventive Chef and Co-Founder, Ollie Templeton. This June, Ollie rolled out a fresh menu inspired by his Central American escapades. Picture the vibrant flavours he encountered, now interwoven with Carousel’s ever-rotating guest chef influences, crafting a dining experience that’s as thrilling as it is tasty.

Carousel has been calling W1 home since 2021, after relocating from Marylebone. With esteemed neighbours such as The Ninth, ROKA and Norma, Carousel certainly holds its own. On the ground floor of this three-story foodie haven, its wine bar with whitewashed walls and dim lighting is a jewel in the Carousel crown.

Carousel Wine Bar is a heartfelt ode to local sourcing. Ollie’s steadfast dedication to suppliers like Penlan Rare Breeds in Herefordshire and Flourish Farm in Cambridgeshire ensures every dish is both delectable and sustainable. This summer, alongside scrumptious dishes, the wine list dazzles with stars like the crisp Domaine Thomas Sancerre ‘Le Pierrier’ 2022 and the bold Tuscan Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva, exuding rich cherry, nutmeg, and oregano aromas.

The new menu kicks off with a flavour explosion in the form of snacks. Think crispy hash browns drizzled with homemade ‘nduja and boquerón, or marbled Mangalitza pork skewers paired with fermented rhubarb. For a lighter bite, there’s the Rye and Westcombe cheddar toastie or the grilled squid slathered in smoked butter and chintextle – a spicy chilli paste straight from Mexico.

The main courses are the true showstoppers. Dive into delights like Tagliolini with girolles, parmesan, and breadcrumbs, or Red Mullet served with butter beans and salsa macha. A standout is the Sea bass crudo with aguachile and preserved daikon, which pairs perfectly with a glass of Nyetimber Classic Cuvée from West Sussex. Vegetarians, rejoice – the menu offers equally tantalising options that change with the seasons, showcasing the freshest produce.

And for dessert? Prepare to be swept off your feet. Indulge in a decadent chocolate mousse with hazelnut, olive oil, and salt, or try the Malted barley and stout caramel ice cream sandwich. Complete your feast with the luscious Dobogó Tokaji Mylitta Late Harvest, a dessert wine bursting with pineapple and honey notes – the perfect sweet ending.

Carousel’s allure extends beyond its wine bar. This award-winning culinary gem hosts a rotating roster of international guest chefs, a neighbourhood restaurant, and a pop-up incubator. With two chic event spaces for big-name brands and a curated selection of workshops and experiences, it’s no wonder Carousel snagged a spot in the 2023 Michelin Guide.

So, whether you’re a wine connoisseur, a food lover with a penchant for the eclectic, or simply searching for a laid-back spot to unwind, Carousel Wine Bar on Charlotte Street promises a culinary escapade you won’t soon forget, one delightful plate (and sip) at a time.
