The Last-Minute UK Half-Term Guide for Families

October half-term is almost here, but a memorable family break doesn’t have to mean a full week away. A well-planned day out, a night or two in the countryside, or even a proper pause for the grown-ups can make the school holiday feel special. We’ve rounded up family-friendly ideas across the UK with a touch of luxury, from outdoor adventures in the Cotswolds to a memorable London treat.

The Lakes by YOO, Cotswolds: an Outdoor Adventure Break

If your children would rather be climbing than sitting still, The Lakes by YOO offers a more active October half-term break. Its programme includes zip-wire sessions, treetop adventures, bushcraft and an adventure camp, alongside Halloween crafts and a Spooktacular event on 30 October. Activities have different age limits: zip-wire sessions start at five, treetop adventures at six and archery at eight, so check the schedule when booking.

The three-night Great Autumn Adventure package is available for stays from 16 October to 2 November. It includes family bike hire, a zip-wire session for each guest, a family tennis session, daily breakfast, spa access and a fire-starter kit for evenings by the wood burner. It’s a lovely mix of fresh-air fun and relaxed lakeside living, with the practical bonus of some activities and extras bundled into the stay.

The Grove, Hertfordshire: a Country-House Half-Term

The Grove’s advantage is that it makes a short countryside break feel easy to organise. Just outside London, the estate has room for children to roam, while its October half-term programme gives the days some shape: pumpkin carving, pony rides, family films and a magic show are all on the schedule.

There’s a spa for parents hoping to steal an hour of calm, but it isn’t a whole-family experience. Sequoia is for guests aged 16 and over, and Anouska’s Kids Club is listed for children aged two to nine. If you’re travelling with a baby or toddler, check childcare arrangements before you book.

Harrods, London: Make Afternoon Tea the Main Event

Harrods can turn a London shopping trip into something the children look forward to as well. Book afternoon tea at The Georgian, where younger guests have their own menu and live piano sets the scene. Children need to be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Then leave time to explore the store. The food halls and toy department give the visit plenty of stops, but a small treat chosen in advance can keep the outing feeling special without turning it into an open-ended shopping spree.

Pan Pacific London: A City Break with Spa Time for the Children

A London stay can be part of the half-term treat, particularly when the hotel gives children something to look forward to between sightseeing. At Pan Pacific London, children aged 6–16 can book Bonpoint spa treatments, and the 18.5-metre pool has dedicated family swim times. Under-16s need to be accompanied by an adult in the spa and pool, so this is a chance to enjoy the facilities together rather than leave the children in someone else’s care.

The room options are practical for families too. The two-bedroom Bishopsgate Suite has games, books and a teepee, while the double-double rooms have two queen beds. At Straits Kitchen, children aged six and under eat free from the children’s menu.

The hotel is two minutes from Liverpool Street station, with the Tower of London and Tower Bridge within walking distance. It makes a well-placed base for a few days of London highlights, with a swim or a children’s spa treatment to look forward to when you return.

Howletts Wild Animal Park, Kent: A Wild Half-Term Day Out

For a half-term day that feels a little different, head to Howletts, just outside Canterbury. Its Howloween programme runs from 23 October to 1 November, with a Creepy Cave to explore, a trail of animal-themed clues and keeper talks at the Conservation Station. One of the day’s best moments may be watching the animals tackle their own pumpkin treats.

There’s enough here to fill a full day: the 100-acre park is home to more than 300 animals, with daily talks and feeds to build into your visit. Children aged three to 15 can enter free with an eligible advance online booking during the Howloween dates, making this a particularly appealing family day out in Kent over October half-term.

Dover Castle, Kent: A Half-Term Day Steeped in History

Set high above the Channel, Dover Castle gives families a chance to step inside the stories they’ve met in books. Explore the interactive exhibition, then climb the Great Tower, where lavish interiors bring the court of Henry II to life. There’s a siege-themed play area for younger visitors, too.

During October half-term, the castle is also hosting its Great Pumpkin Party, with interactive storytelling, spooky games, a themed trail and a fancy-dress competition. It runs from 24 October to 1 November, with activities included in standard admission.

Kew Gardens, London: Autumn Discovery by Day, Halloween after Dark

Kew gives families two very different ways to spend a half-term day. Younger visitors can follow the Hey Duggee autumn trail, collecting badge stamps and exploring the Gardens through playful activities inspired by plants and fungi. It’s aimed at children aged three to seven and runs from 17 October to 1 November.

For families with older children, Halloween at Kew brings an after-dark alternative: an illuminated trail with theatrical scenes and performers, running on selected evenings from 16 October to 1 November. Choose the experience that best suits your children’s ages and stamina, and book ahead for the evening trail.

Matilda the Musical, London: a West End Half-Term Treat

Few stories have Matilda’s cross-generational pull: children adore the clever, rebellious heroine, while grown-ups get the dark wit and gloriously absurd adults around her. At the Cambridge Theatre in Seven Dials, Roald Dahl’s much-loved story becomes a lively West End production, full of inventive staging and songs that stay with you long after the curtain falls.

A 2pm matinee on Thursday 29 October makes it an easy centrepiece for a London half-term day. For families who want to make more of the occasion, the theatre’s VIP experience adds top-price seats, a souvenir programme, pre-show drinks and snacks, and ice cream at a reserved table during the interval. Age guidance is six and above.

Summit at Alexandra Palace, London: See Ally Pally from Above

For a different view of London this half-term, Summit takes families up onto the roof of Alexandra Palace. Guides lead the climb, share stories about the landmark and point out the city beyond it; the changing skyline turns the walk into its own kind of adventure. There are daytime, sunset and London Lights climbs, so families can choose the atmosphere that suits them.

The Palace has a story worth lingering over, too. On 2 November 2026, Alexandra Palace marks 90 years since the BBC began its first regular high-definition television service from the site. It’s a timely reason to explore Ally Pally and its park this autumn, with the anniversary falling just after the main October half-term dates.

Summit is suitable for children aged eight and over who are at least 1.2 metres tall. Under-18s must climb with an adult, with a maximum of four young people per adult.

Amazónico, Mayfair: Make Sunday Lunch the Occasion

Amazónico is turning Sunday lunch into a family feast. Its new ASADO Lento launches on 25 October, with slow-cooked dishes to share and a dedicated ASADO Niño menu for younger diners. Set in the restaurant’s dramatic, rainforest-inspired Mayfair dining room, it offers a more spirited take on the traditional Sunday roast.

The experience runs on Sundays through to the end of the year, from 1pm to 4pm. The adult menu is £65 per person and the children’s menu is £25. Book ahead, and if you get to experience it with your family.
