A Glorious Greek Feast at HERA, Stratford

It’s been a few months since HERA entered Stratford’s dining scene, and it’s safe to say that they’ve single-handedly raised the bar to new heights. Whilst the area surrounding Westfield buzzes with chain restaurants, popular stands, and notable pop-ups, this new contemporary restaurant is situated away from the busy centre and offers a new layer of luxury.

Although, at present, it appears oddly far removed, this won’t be for long. As the area takes shape to become a new vibrant East London hub, this (literally) hidden gem is bound to become a hotspot. My advice? Visit while it’s still under the radar.

Stepping inside, you’re greeted by a dramatic, double-height space bathed in the atmospheric glow of hanging lanterns. The interiors exude sophistication: a dark neutral palette with warm tones, floor-to-ceiling windows, lush greenery (including a living wall), and a minimalist bar, lit up with colourful bottles. Romantic vibes fill the air, but it’s equally chilled and ideal for friends and family too. It serves as a visual feast; however, the real magic happens on the plate.

HERA is a celebration of Greek cuisine at its finest. Named after the Greek goddess of family and hospitality, the restaurant stays true to its roots with traditional recipes made using seasonal ingredients and a touch of modern flair. The menu reflects the warmth of Greek culture, inviting diners to embrace the family-style sharing concept.

It is divided into three categories: Meat, Sea, and Mediterranean. Sharing is the way to go, so I’d recommend about seven plates for two (four small and three large)—more than enough for a hearty feast. Of course, you can also stick to individual courses; however, it’s hard to resist sampling multiple dishes when the menu is so well-curated. Luckily, set menus are also available to assist with these brain-racking decisions, offering both a classic and signature experience. But here are my recommendations:

For the Table: Start with the Bread Basket, featuring warm sourdough, pita, and crostini, perfect for dipping into the creamy Tzatziki or pairing with the juicy, plump Greek Olives.

Small Plates: Opt for a Greek Salad, which is always a good idea. Or treat yourself to the Feta Saganaki—wrapped in delicate angel hair and drizzled with lemon honey, it’s a perfect harmony of sweet and savoury. Other must-tries include the comforting Beef Meatballs and refreshing Seabass Carpaccio. Vegetarians aren’t left behind, with delicious options such as Wild Spinach, Roastedx Beetroot, and Smoked Aubergine —each dressed to perfection.

Mains: For meat lovers, the Charcoal Chicken Skewers (marinated in honey mustard) and rosemary-grilled Lamb Chops are both irresistible tender dishes, bursting with flavour. Pair these with sides of Roasted PotatoesGrilled Broccoli, or the heavenly Feta Chips drizzled with thyme and truffle oil.

Dive into the Mediterranean shores with Seabass, King Prawns, Red Mullet, and Grilled Octopus. For something more comforting, the mainland classics offer Orzo, Ravioli, and a rich Courgette and Aubergine Moussaka.

Desserts: Finish with the classic Greek Loukoumades (golden, fluffy bites) drizzled in lemon honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and pistachios. Other traditional dessert choices include the Galaktoboureko (flaky phyllo filled with velvety vanilla custard), Ekmek Kataifi (layers of shredded kataifi, pistachios, and cream), and the chocolate-drizzled Halva.

Drinks: HERA is fronted by a stunning cocktail lounge, right at the entrance. Sip on their collection of ‘Signatures,’ a Mediterranean spin on well-known classics; savour a unique non-alcoholic blend, or pick a bottle from the wonderful list of Greek wines. Of course, there’s Ouzo and Mastika to have too.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s worth the trek, HERA is a dining experience that lingers long after the last bite. Don’t wait—this is the kind of place you’ll want to enjoy before the crowds appear.
